....When pivoting to a remote working arrangement there is a temptation to treat the remote worker as a 2nd class citizen. Many managers rely on the small social interactions they have in the office to know if someone is working, but how should they monitor them when remote?
Let us have a look at these social interactions and how we can get them to work for us in a remote environment.
This is part of a series of posts, so look out for more to come. I will add links to the end as they are posted.

....Certainly, it is easy to see in the office if you walk around. However, let us be curious and ask ourselves what might be going on in the office.

If they are not at their desk, perhaps at someone else’s desk with them, does that mean they have stopped working? Probably not.

If someone is sat at their desk, with a spreadsheet open does that mean they are working? Perhaps they have YouTube or Spotify open, headphones on and excel open, but does that mean they are not working? Or they have a physical notebook open. Do any of these mean they are not working, probably not.

Probablemente no.

....Do any of these mean they are working though? No idea! The only way to know is to engage with the person or wait and see what the outcome (not output) is of their work. To see the outcome, you need an understanding of the type of work and the context of the desired outcome.

Note: Interestingly, if the outcome is not achieved is it because the leader / manager did not explain the context in the best manner for the individual contributor?

....Switch to a remote environment. What is different? The only item that is different here is being able to physically look across the office to see people. However, what value did that provide in the paragraphs above – let me tell you here, no value, zero value.

Instead, it may be that the remote person has music on – they might not need headphones, so it might be better for their ears. 😊 They might have a spreadsheet open, they might be drawing or writing on a physical book, they may be getting a coffee or water. All three are the same as in the office.

So, when someone is remote, we also need to either engage with the person or wait and see what the outcome (not output) is of their work.

....Conclusion ..Conclusión ....

....No change here between office and remote!

Although we cannot physically go and stand behind the person if we do not trust them. If we do not trust them, why did we employ them? Lack of trust is a deeper issue, but not related to where the person is working. We need TRUST in both office and remote environments!
